There isn't a lot of light pollution out there, so looking up at the night sky was a brilliant display of natural fireworks every night. At least, that's how I felt. I used to stand on a bucket to try to reach the stars, but then I realized that the clothesline was higher . . . and the roof higher than that. Mountains, airplanes, lots of things had a height advantage over me; it wasn't until poking around in my dad's Astronomy magazines that I realized how far the stars are. After he explained to me how far a light year is, I began to grasp the order and magnitude of the universe. I found my first love: Astronomy. I used to watch a TV show called "Cosmos", hosted by Carl Sagan. He was my hero, and from him I learned much about the universe. At the age of 5 I wrote him a letter, and he wrote back sending pics of the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter. I thought then that I wanted to be an Astronaut; but time went on and I grew up, and I forgot my childhood dreams . . . for a time. When I started college at 17, I thought I was going to write video games and design computers; but I hated it. So I stopped going and got a bunch of great dot com jobs, most notably as a SysAdmin and an IT Engineer. When the market dried up (the "dot bomb") I decided I should go back to school at finish my Computer Engineering degree. Fortunately all engineers are required to take a certain amount of Physics classes, and my professors discovered that I have a knack for Astrophysics. In the Spring of 2005 I took Astronomy 101, and my prof was so impressed with my grasp of Astronomy that he gave me a research position at NASA. While there I discovered what the prerequisites are for the Astronaut Program, and now after all these years my dream is finally within my grasp. NASA is currently recruiting for the 2013 Astronaut Class. And I am currently an Astrophysicist working as a Physics Professor at San Jose State University. When I was a little boy growing up in Hawaii, my dad never allowed me to study the martial arts. The pursuit called to me, my soul ached to train. It wasn't until I was 13 and moved to Cali that I was able to begin my training. In particular, I desired to study the Katana, the Samurai sword. It wasn't until after about 8 years of martial study (with a few years studying the sword) that I understood why. When I was ready, my grandmother disclosed to me that I am descended from a family of samurai who were, for a century, the greatest swordsmen in all Japan. Now with 16 years of martial arts training (Mitose Kenpo, Muay Thai, and a smattering of Jiujitsu, Aikido, Ninjutsu, Wing Tsun, Uechi-Ryu, Shotokan, etc.) I can safely say that I have used my powers for good in this world. Outside of training, sparring, and tournaments (of which I had won several, even by the age of 17) I have never been in a fight in my life. Not that I back down; Isaac Asimov once said that violence is the last resort of the uncreative. About three years ago, I started something that I had always wanted to try: breakdancing. And now I'm hooked. Breakin, like the martial arts, is a great vehicle for self development. It's everything from balance and coordination to cardio and strength training. The culture surrounding it is rich in music, art, and style. And it's so much fun that I can't ever imagine putting it down. I only wish I had started sooner. Once randomly on my travels I found myself in Toronto, walking home on a rainy night. Somehow through the pouring rain I heard a muffled "mew *blub*blub* mew". Looking into the storm drain below me I saw a pair of ears and a flailing paw; so I reached in and pulled out a soaking wet kitten. I turned her upside down to drain the water from her lungs and dried her off with my hoodie. She cried when I tried to put her down, so I took her home. That was the only time in my life I ever had a pet; I have this thing about keeping animals in captivity. I wasn't able to bring her back because of legal issues crossing a kitty over the Canadian border, but she's in a good home. Over recent months I have been contemplating getting a dog; probably an Akita, as the samurai used to train them to hunt bears.
